Our course on early childhood education is perfect for teachers who want to learn what modern early childhood services need. You will learn about the philosophies, principles, and practices of teaching young children, as well as how language and literacy, math, arts, science, and health and well-being are taught and learned in play-based early childhood education programs.

The Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) has given this course national accreditation, and the Victorian Institute of Teaching will let you register as an Early Childhood Teacher after you finish it.

Career & Learning Outcomes

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education is a degree that lets you teach young children. When you're done, you'll have to register as an Early Childhood Teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.


As a registered early childhood teacher, you can find work at a number of places, including, but not limited to:

  • Preschools

  • Kindergartens

  • Long day care settings


There are many opportunities in Australia, both in cities and in the country.


At the end of the degree, you should be able to:


  • Early childhood graduate teachers must possess the necessary instructional abilities and expertise (refer to the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers)


  • Partnership-building skills with families and other service providers


  • Strong pedagogical leadership abilities, practical critical reflection abilities, and teaching practice improvement


  • The capacity to function effectively in dynamic early children work situations and to address the variety of the early childhood and larger community


  • Advocate for children, early childhood education, and the larger education sector with the necessary leadership 


  • And management abilities to support organizational transformation confidence in using ICT appropriately for teaching and learning, and for administration and management

Entry Requirements

Applicants with advanced degrees research

Applicants can apply if they have finished part of a higher education course, either at a higher education provider other than a university or at a university. Applicants from other schools who want to switch to Box Hill Institute or Box Hill Institute students who want to switch to a different course can apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). 


All RPL requests are looked at on an individual basis, and approval is given for subjects where the content and learning outcomes have been shown to have been met by completing subjects in a previous course.


You can apply directly to study with us, and you must also have:


  • Current police record checks and working with children checks


  • Obtained a score of at least 25 in the Units 3 and 4 of the VCE English set of studies OR displayed an equivalent level of literacy


  • A VCE mathematics unit grade of at least 25 OR successful completion of a tertiary entrance mathematics equivalence course (TEMEC)


  • Satisfactorily completing a 30-minute selection interview that was conducted one-on-one. Instead of the CASPer test, which is not necessary for enrollment in this course, a selection interview will be held. During the selection interview, you will be verbally evaluated for your suitability to teach young children through a series of questions that include situations analysis.


  • Sufficient computer skills for using StudentWeb to submit word-processed assignments, complete online tutorials, and access subject resources
