A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biotechnology at UNSW Science will prepare you to make a unique contribution to your chosen field of science. The PhD is a program of specialized expert knowledge that will open doors to academic, scientific, and professional roles in the United States and abroad.


Students conduct individual research projects that are related to the larger interests of one of the school's research teams. During the early stages of the program, students are closely watched and coached in the management of their projects. 


In the final stages of the program, students are encouraged to take initiative and be creative. The candidate should be able to work independently in the final year of the program and be led rather than directed by the supervisor.

Students must finish 144 UOC if taking the program as a stand-alone.

Admissions Requirements

The minimum prerequisites for admission to a PhD program are as follows:


  1. A relevant UNSW bachelor's degree with upper second-class honors; or 

  2. A completed UNSW Masters by Research with a large research component and evidence of the ability to finish a high-quality research thesis on time; or 

  3. An equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution, as determined by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee (HDC).


The following are the minimum requirements for a UNSW scholarship with PhD admission:


  • A four-year bachelor's degree with honors from an Australian university or comparable research qualification experience must be in a field relevant to the proposed research area.

English requirements

To be considered for admission, all applicants must demonstrate that they can communicate in English at a level that meets the following basic requirements: The University of New South Wales has English language requirements.


Domestic students: The Australian Government's Research Training Scheme (RTS) exempts Commonwealth-funded higher degree by research (HDR) candidates from paying tuition fees for up to four years of full-time equivalent study throughout their PhD by research. The UNSW Student Services Amenities Fee is payable by domestic students.


Students from abroad: Fees and Costs for International Postgraduate Research Candidates can be found on the GRS Fees and Costs website. The UNSW Student Services Amenities Fee is waived for international students.
