The Master of Infectious Diseases Intelligence takes a multi-sector approach to preventing and controlling infectious diseases. 


Here, you will learn how to utilize advanced disciplinary knowledge and abilities in a variety of ways to improve population health outcomes in the control of infectious diseases and health emergencies. 


From a public health standpoint, you'll graduate with a full variety of understanding of infectious disease surveillance and intelligence, outbreak investigation and response, and infection prevention and mitigation.


This course is designed for professionals interested in learning more about infectious disease intelligence in the age of emerging disease risks, as well as management approaches for infectious disease detection, evaluation, prevention, and control.

What you will study

The Master of Infectious Illnesses Intelligence program will teach you how to use a multidisciplinary public health strategy to control infectious diseases. You'll leave with a thorough understanding of epidemic patterns, as well as the capacity to critically examine and apply that knowledge to real-world issues.


While studying under the leadership of internationally recognized academics, you'll learn about and gain hands-on experience in critical areas of infectious disease intelligence, including:


  1. Current and future infectious disease challenges

  2. Disease surveillance

  3. Outbreak investigation and implementing infection prevention and control programs

  4. Emergency response

  5. Research

  6. Infectious disease epidemiology.

The Master of Infectious Diseases Intelligence can be completed in one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. The curriculum has eight courses in all, including:


  1. Five core courses 

  2. Three elective courses

Admissions Requirements

Entry requirements

To be admitted into this program, you must meet one of the following requirements:


Two years of full-time professional or volunteer experience in an area linked to public health or health administration, as well as a bachelor's degree in a related discipline is required. Equivalent professional experience gained as part of a four-year or longer degree program could also be considered (e.g., MBBS, MD).


A bachelor's degree with a master's or doctoral degree in public health or health administration is required.


In exceptional circumstances, applicants with significant relevant professional job experience (e.g., hospital-trained nurses, paramedics, Aboriginal health workers) may be considered. If you have at least five years of full-time relevant professional experience, you may be invited to an interview with the School of Population Health.

English Language Requirements

In order to study at UNSW, you may be asked to provide confirmation of your English ability, depending on your educational history and citizenship for enrolment, since English language skills are crucial for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments, and exams.


If you're studying for an Australian Year 12 certificate, you don't need to provide any additional evidence of your competence (e.g. NSW HSC or equivalent). Your diploma will be used to prove your English language proficiency.


It will be mentioned in your application if proof of English proficiency is necessary. You can do so by demonstrating that you meet at least one of the following requirements:

  2. Prior English language schooling is also a requirement.
